Swayams clinches title in Fide rated tournament

Orissa`s Swayams Mishra scripted another success story in chess by emerging champion in the Fide Rated Tournament, which concluded Dumdum in Kolkata today. The Cuttack teenager pipped Soumya Thakurta of West Bengal on the basis of progressive score (49 against 47.5) after the duo tied for the top spot with 8.5 points each. In the 10th and final round, Swayams settled for a draw against Thakurta. The title win fetched Swayams Rs 10,000. Among two International Masters in the field, Saptarshi Roy finished third, while Arghyadip Das contended himself with the 11th position. Among 20 other Orissa players, Mohammad Ashraf occupied the 15th position with 7.5 points. In the six-day tournament, Swayams won seven games and drew the remaining three. His wins came against Barun Mal, Poulapta Kar, Vishal Aiyar, Trailokya Nanda, Chandrashish Mazumdar, Amit Kumar Medda and Anjan Mallick. He split points against Ashutosh Kumar, Saptarshi Roy and Soumya Thakurta. The tournament was organised by North 24 Praganas District Chess Association under the auspices of West Bengal Chess Association. Final standings (Top 10): 1. Swayams Mishra (8.5), 2.
